Begin with items that you will not be need before or immediately after the move, and/or items that will be placed in storage.
If possible, choose a room to do your packing or a room in which to place boxes already packed where they will be clear of walkways for your family and the movers.
Pack one room at a time when possible to simplify the delivery and unpacking process.
Use sturdy clean, boxes of the appropriate size for the items being packed. Allow space to wrap and cushion items. Use good quality packing tape (not masking tape) to secure boxes.
The heavier the items you are packing, the smaller the box you should use. For example, books and papers should be placed in small boxes due to their weight. As a rule, boxes should not exceed 50 pounds.
Pack similar items together (dishes with dishes, pans with pans) to prevent damage to fragile items and avoid confusion when unpacking.
Use small zip style bags to keep small parts and/or hardware together with the items to which they belong.
Clearly mark all boxes with permanent markers with the room from which the items came (or will be going) and a short description of contents. Mark as fragile or “this end up” when appropriate.
Identify boxes you will need soonest after arrival.
